My Skincare Routine: Simple, Steady, and Here to Stay (Dry & Sensitive Skin)

My Skincare Routine: Simple, Steady, and Here to Stay

Let me say this right off the top:

Cleansed Unfiltered Face

I am not the โ€œ20 products, switch it up every seasonโ€ girlie. I am a creature of habit with dry, sensitive skin, and once I find something that works, I stick with it.

It is not about chasing perfect skin.

Waitโ€ฆ yes, it is! Ha.

But it is also about feeling clean, hydrated, and cared for, with the fewest steps possible.

Building a Skincare Routine

If you are trying to build a skincare routine, you might have to go through a little trial and error. Do not get discouraged. You are just figuring out what your skin likes, and that takes a little patience.

If you are anything like me, this part can be fun.

Researching, discovering, reading reviews, it is all part of the process.

Biggest Tip!

Add one new product at a time.

That way, if something causes irritation or throws your skin off, you know exactly what to eliminate, without having to guess.

My Morning Routine: Rinse, Hydrate, Protect

I do not cleanse my face in the mornings. Why?
Because honestly, what were you doing overnight that your face needs a full reset?

Never mind, I do not want to know. Unless you want to tell me.

Here is what I reach for in the AM:

โ€ข Splash of cold water โ€“ That is it. Just to wake up my face.

โ€ข La Roche-Posay Vitamin C Serum โ€“ A quick hit of brightness and antioxidant protection. Lightweight and smooth under everything.

โ€ข The Ordinary Squalane Oil โ€“ My OG. My day-one favorite. I have used this for years, and my skin loves it, especially when it is dry or irritated. A few drops and my skin feels instantly calmer and smoother.

โ€ข Kiehlโ€™s Avocado Eye Cream โ€“ Hydrates and softens. I told my cousin I felt like I needed Botox under my eyes. She said, โ€œNo you do not,โ€ so I bought this instead.

โ€ข Kiehlโ€™s Ultra Facial Cream with Squalane โ€“ My favorite moisturizer. Thick enough to do its job, light enough not to feel greasy. My other favorite moisturizer, La Roche Posay Double Repair.

โ€ข Trader Joeโ€™s Daily Facial Sunscreen (SPF 40) โ€“ No white cast. Great for us brown-skin girls. No irritation. No weird smell. Just clean sun protection that layers perfectly, even if you are applying make-up.

That is it. Five products. Five minutes. And I am out the doorโ€”or at least closer to it.

New Facial Cleansing Tool

Iโ€™ve been using my new FOREO facial cleansing device, and I love it. Itโ€™s incredibly soft on my skin but still feels like itโ€™s doing real work. My face feels cleaner and smoother every time I use it.

The silicone bristles are gentle. The T-Sonicโ„ข pulsations give a deep cleanse without stripping my skin, which is perfect for my dry skin.

I love it so much. Iโ€™m seriously considering upgrading to the larger version and passing this one down to my daughter (sheโ€™s already been eyeing it!). Itโ€™s one of those skincare tools that makes you wonder why you didnโ€™t add it sooner.

Foreo is currently having a Birthday sale. Visit, http://www.foreo.com and use promo code: PARTY35 for 35% off.

Night Routine: Cleanse, Restore, Sleep

At night, it is non-negotiable: I double-cleanse my face.

Not because I wear a full face of makeup, I usually do not, but because the air is filthy.

Pollution, sunscreen, whatever is floating around out there, it all needs to go.

โ€ข La Roche-Posay Lipikar Oil Cleanser โ€“ Gentle, hydrating, and removes everything. It breaks down makeup effortlessly, even waterproof stuff, and still leaves my skin soft, not stripped. Their Gentle Hydrating Cleanser is also good!

โ€ข Kiehlโ€™s Avocado Eye Cream โ€“ Hydrates and softens. I told my cousin I felt like I needed Botox under my eyes. She said, โ€œNo you do not,โ€ so I bought this instead.

โ€ข Kiehlโ€™s Midnight Recovery Oil (New Addition) โ€“ During girlsโ€™ night, this was said to be a must-have. I picked it up during Kiehlโ€™s SALE. It adds a little glow and feels like quiet luxury.

โ€ข Kiehlโ€™s Ultra Facial Cream with Squalane โ€“ Same as the morningโ€”because why mess with what works?

Why This Works for Me

This routine is:

โ€ข Hydrating, not heavy

โ€ข Simple, not boring

โ€ข Consistent, not complicated

It is easy, it is gentle, and it makes me feel like I am doing something good for myself every single day.

And I love that for me.

Skincare rule: Do not let your neck betray you.

Youthful face + moisturized neck = aging gracefully together.

For Anyone Whoโ€™s Overwhelmed

If you are building your routine or trying to simplify things, here is what I have learned:

You do not need a shelf full of products. You just need a few that your skin responds to, and that you enjoy using.

Start simple:

Cleanser + Moisturizer + Sunscreen

What about you?

Are you a routine lover or a product explorer?

Drop your faves or your ride-or-die skincare items in the comments.

I always love hearing what works for other people, even if I am not changing up anytime soon.

20 Frequent Asked Carnival Cruise Questions Youโ€™re Probably Already Wondering About

20 Frequent Asked Carnival Cruise Questions Youโ€™re Probably Already Wondering About

And yes, Iโ€™ve got answers. Letโ€™s get you cruise-ready, without the overwhelm.

Planning your first (or fifteenth) Carnival Cruise? Whether you’re traveling with your partner, your kids, or your crew, there are always questions that pop up before you set sail. And if youโ€™re anything like me, you want real answers from someone who’s been there, not a maze of fine print (but I include links with all that too).

So I rounded up 20 of the most frequently asked cruise questions, from what to pack to how not to lose your Sail & Sign card. Letโ€™s break it all the way down.

Before You Sail: Planning & Prep

1. Do I need a passport to go on a Carnival Cruise?

If your cruise is closed-loop (starts and ends in the same U.S. port), a birth certificate + photo ID works. But a passport is the safest option in case of emergencies.
โ†’ Carnivalโ€™s official ID requirements

2. Are cruise fares refundable if I canโ€™t go?

It depends on how early you cancel. The closer you get to your sail date, the less youโ€™ll get back.
โ†’ Carnivalโ€™s cancellation policy
Pro tip: Consider adding Carnival Vacation Protection for coverage and peace of mind.

3. Is there a minimum age to cruise?

Yesโ€”6 months old for most cruises, 12 months for longer or exotic ones. And anyone under 21 must sail with someone 25 or older in the same room.
โ†’ Carnivalโ€™s minor guest policy

4. Can I bring my water bottle or canteen?

Yep! Bring your reusable bottle and refill it at water stations onboard. Insulated bottles are clutch for port days.

5. Can I bring snacks or drinks onboard?

You can bring sealed snacks and one 12-pack of non-alcoholic drinks (cans or cartons) per person. No glass bottles, no liquor (unless itโ€™s the one bottle of wine per adult).
โ†’ Carnival beverage policy

Cabins, Cards & Spending

6. How many people can sleep in a stateroom cabin?

Most cabins fit 2โ€“4 people, and some family rooms or suites fit up to 5. For bigger groups, connecting rooms are your best friend.

7. What can I use so I donโ€™t lose my Sail & Sign card?

Get a lanyard with a pouch. It keeps your card handy for everything. Room access, purchases, boarding, and getting on and off the ship at ports of call.

8. Do kids have access to money on the ship?

Yes, through their Sail & Sign card. It works like a debit card onboard.

9. Can I put a spending limit on my childโ€™s Sail & Sign card?

Absolutely! You can cap or block spending for kids and teens right in your Carnival Account or at Guest Services.

10. Are gratuities (tips) included?

Theyโ€™re automatically addedโ€”about $16โ€“$18 per person/day depending on your cabin. You can prepay or adjust onboard.
โ†’ Gratuities explained

Life Onboard: Food, Fun & Feeling Good

11. Whatโ€™s included in the cruise fare?

Your room, all meals (excluding specialty dining), drinks (water, tea, lemondade and juice during breakfast), pools, shows, and onboard activities. Youโ€™ll pay extra for Wi-Fi, excursions, soda, alcohol drinks, and spa services.

12. Is Wi-Fi available on board?

Yes, but itโ€™s not free!  Carnival has 3 plans: Social, Value, and Premium.
โ†’ Carnival Wi-Fi packages

13. Is there bottled water on the ship? How much does it cost?

Yes.. You can pre-order a case to your room or while on the ship through room service.

14. Do people get sick on cruises?

Sometimes. Sea sickness or colds are the most common.
Tips to avoid it:
โ€“ Book a mid-ship, lower deck room
โ€“ Bring Dramamine, Sea-Bands, or ginger chews
โ€“ Drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals prior to sailing, and get fresh air while on board
โ†’ Carnivalโ€™s health guidelines

15. What should I wear on the cruise?

Daytime: swimsuits, casual wear.
Evening: cruise casual with a couple โ€œCruise Elegantโ€ nights (think cocktail dresses or slacks & button-ups).
โ†’ Carnival dress code

In Port & On Excursions

16. Are shore excursions worth it?

Yes, if you want more than beach time or walking along the piers. Carnival offers excursions for every vibe. Relaxing, adventurous, foodie approved. You can also wait and book an excursion on your own.ย  Just donโ€™t miss that ship. No, but seriously, donโ€™t miss the ship.

17. Is cruising good for families or couples?

Both. Thereโ€™s something for everyone: waterparks and kidsโ€™ clubs for families, adults-only spaces and spas for couples. You set the tone and the vibe you want to have while sailing.

Packing & Practical Tips

18. What should I NOT pack for a cruise?

Leave these at home:
โ€“ Irons or steamers
โ€“ Candles/incense
โ€“ Drones
โ€“ Surge protectors
โ€“ Alcohol (unless itโ€™s your one wine bottle)
โ†’ Carnival prohibited items

19. How do I stay in touch with my family and friends that are on the ship?

Use the Carnival Hub app to chat for just $5 per person (no Wi-Fi plan needed).
Some families also bring mini walkie-talkies. Great for kids or those who donโ€™t use phones much. Just know the signal works best on open decks.

20. Is cruising worth it?

Absolutely. You unpack once, wake up somewhere new every day, and everything you need is right there on the ship. Whether you want relaxation, nonstop fun, or a little of both, youโ€™re covered.

Final Cruise Tips from Me to You:

โ€“ Download the Carnival Hub App before you board
โ€“ Bring a power strip (non-surge) for extra outlets
โ€“ Take a photo of your passport and ID just in case
โ€“ Donโ€™t forget meds, sunscreen, and comfy shoes
โ€“ Pack the patience, good vibes, have a blast

DIY Trophy Shelf: How to Build and Hang a Trophy Shelf in One Afternoon

DIY Trophy Shelf: How to Build and Hang a Trophy Shelf in One Afternoon

Iโ€™ll admit it, I know my way around tools and woodworking a bit. But donโ€™t worry, you donโ€™t need to be an expert to tackle this project. This DIY trophy shelf is simple, affordable, and quick to execute with just a few tools and materials.

For years, my familyโ€™s trophies sat forgotten in a tub, then later on a cabinet, gathering dust. Honestly, I should have built these shelves ages ago. Donโ€™t make the same mistake I did! Grab your materials today. Finally give those hard-earned awards, or any items you have been wanting to display, the showcase they deserve. Letโ€™s get building!

Materials You Will Need:

  • Common Board

You can find one here for about $20:

 1 in. x 12 in. x 6 ft. Common Board 458511 – The Home Depot

  • Heavy Duty Shelf Brackets
  • Purchase them here for about $18:

Amazon.com: 4 Pcs Heavy Duty Shelf Brackets 8 Inch Industrial Metal Floating Bracket Shelving Supports Wall Mounted with Lip (Not Included Planks) : Tools & Home Improvement

Tools:

  • Saw (or have your local hardware store make the cuts for you if you donโ€™t have a miter saw)
  • Sandpaper
  • Measuring tape
  • Drill
  • Stud finder
  • Leveler
  • Spray paint or stain (your choice of color/finish)

Letโ€™s Get Started:

1. Cut Your Board

If you are making your own cuts, measure and cut your board to the desired length. In this example, I am making two 3-foot-long shelves from one 6 foot length board cut in half.  If you do not have a saw at home, do not worry. Most local hardware stores can make cuts for you.

2. Sand Your Boards

Move to a workspace or table and lay your boards flat.  Begin sanding each side until the surface is smooth to the touch.  This will likely be the most time-consuming step.  If you have a power sander, I highly recommend using it to cut your sanding time in half.  I sanded by hand this time because I did not feel like dragging my sander out.

Once you have sanded down both sides and eliminated any rough edges, dust off the boards to remove debris.  Be sure to also dust your workspace so it is clean and ready for the next step.

3. Paint or Stain

I chose spray paint because it is fast and easy. Staining the wood is another excellent option. It provides a beautiful finish. I have done both in other parts of my home, and they both look awesome.  Paint or stain one side of the boards and let them dry while you prepare your wall for the shelves.

4. Measure and Mark the Wall

While your boards are drying, go to the space where you plan to hang the shelves.  Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall.  Mark the stud locations with a pencil to ensure the shelves will be properly supported.

Next, measure and mark where the brackets will be placed.  Drill the first bracket into the wall. Use a leveler to ensure the second bracket is even before drilling it into place.  Repeat this process for the second shelf. Use a trophy or another item to gauge the appropriate spacing between the shelves.

5. Finish Painting the Boards

Once the brackets are installed, return to your workspace. Flip the boards over to paint or stain the other side.  Once finished, allow them to dry completely. (Pro tip: use this drying time to take a break or, in my case, make dinner!)

6. Assemble the Shelf

Once both sides of the boards are dry, bring them inside and place them on the brackets.  Arrange your trophies or other items on the shelves how you see fit.

7. Show Off Your Work

Finally, call everyone in to admire your craftsmanship.  Enjoy the compliments from your family. They will tell you what an amazing job you did building and hanging a trophy shelf. You accomplished this all in just one afternoon!

Final Thoughts: This project is not only quick and rewarding but also customizable.  You can build a display for trophies, books, or decor. This method can be easily adapted to suit your needs.  Happy building!

Bobo’s Restaurant: The Best Breakfast in Tucson: Why Boboโ€™s Is Worth the Wait

The Best Breakfast in Tucson: Why Boboโ€™s Is Worth the Wait

Tucson, Arizona is not just a place we drive to for concerts or a quick getaway, itโ€™s also home to one of the best breakfast spots weโ€™ve ever experienced, Boboโ€™s Restaurant.  During one of our trips, I searched for โ€œthe best breakfast in Tucson,โ€ and Yelp led us straight to this charming gem.  With nearly a five-star rating, we knew we had to check it out.  Spoiler alert: it did not disappoint.

The Drive to Tucson

Getting from Phoenix to Tucson is an easy 95-mile drive, taking about an hour and a half.  Whether you are headed there for a specific event or just passing through, you will definitely want to make time for a stop at Boboโ€™s.

First Impressions

We first visited Boboโ€™s on a Sunday morning around 11:30 AM. It is a very small, yellow brick building sitting off a main road, that otherwise I would have driven passed.  When we arrived, about 10โ€“15 people were already waiting outside. Pro tip: if you are not a fan of waiting, plan your visit strategically.  The wait for a table can take about an hour during peak times, but we have also visited later in the day, about 40 minutes before closing, and got seated immediately.

Whatโ€™s On the Menu

Letโ€™s talk about the food, because itโ€™s why you go to Boboโ€™s, and itโ€™s what makes the wait 100% worth it.  Over a few visits, we have tried several dishes:

  • Apple Upside-Down Pancake: ย My husband says this is a breakfast masterpiece thatโ€™s equal parts sweet and filling.
  • Buttermilk Pancake: Fluffy perfection every single time. Cutting your pancakes like this makes them taste even better.
  • Chicken Fried Steak with Eggs & Fried Potatoes: Comfort food at its finest, with rich gravy. I usually put it on the side, because you cannot trust everyone’s gravy. I eventually put it on my food, since it passed the taste test. The potatoes I can have live without.
  • French Toast with Eggs & Bacon: The French toast is done how we used to make cinnamon toast in the oven as kids.

The consistency of the food is outstanding.  It is clear why Boboโ€™s has earned its loyal following and stellar Yelp ratings.

Cost & Value

If you do not know by now, I am always about value, and for the quality and portion sizes, Boboโ€™s offers unbeatable value.  Whether you are craving something hearty or sweet, you will leave both satisfied and full without breaking the bank.

Better Than Momโ€™s Cooking?

Boboโ€™s tagline is โ€œJust like momโ€™s cookinโ€™,โ€ but honestly, they might need to tweak it to โ€œBetter than your momโ€™s cookin,โ€™ at least for breakfast.  Sorry, Mom!โ€  It is that good.

Plan Your Visit

Location: ย Boboโ€™s Restaurant, 2938 E. Grant Rd. Tucson, AZ 85716

Pro Tip: If you want to skip the wait, aim for non-peak hours (like just before closing or early morning).

Whether you are heading to Tucson for a concert, a day trip, or even just passing through, Boboโ€™s Restaurant is a must-visit for breakfast lovers. ย Trust me, it is worth every mile and every minute of the wait.

Think Wine Tasting, but with Coffee: My Experience at Press Coffee Roasterโ€™s Interactive 101 Class

Think Wine Tasting, but with Coffee: My Experience at Press Coffee Roasterโ€™s Interactive 101 Class

When I signed up for Press Coffee’s 101 class, I wasnโ€™t entirely convinced that I’d walk out a coffee aficionado. But as it turns out, I left with some serious coffee knowledge.  Everything from where coffee originates, to how itโ€™s processed, to what it takes to get it from the farm to your cup.

I stumbled upon this class thanks to Eventbriteโ€™s โ€œevents you might likeโ€ feature (they know me so well), and seeing Press Coffeeโ€™s name didnโ€™t hurt.  Press Coffee is always listed as one of the valleyโ€™s premier coffee roasters.  After all, they have 12 locations around Arizona and even supply coffee to multiple retail spots across the valley.

The Scene at Press Coffee

We arrived to find Press buzzing with coffee drinkers in the front, some sipping and socializing, others laser-focused on laptops.  In the back, thereโ€™s a spacious second level for more seating, but we stayed downstairs, where three enormous coffee bean roasters sat in all their luxuriousness, along with our cozy 12-person classroom setup.  It was perfect for both tasting and learning.

Our host welcomed us with a steamy cup of Gesha coffee.  This rare, high-end coffee ($50 per cup, just FYI!) has a unique profile thatโ€™s more tea-like than coffee-like, and he wasnโ€™t kidding.  It was a delicate, almost floral flavor, unlike anything Iโ€™d tasted in coffee form.

The Class Kicks Off

From there, we dove into the rich world of coffee.  We learned about origins, flavors, and roasting techniques.  A cool part of the tasting was letting each blend cool down a bit and then trying it again.  Who knew a little time could bring out so many different notes?

My Favorite Coffee Roast

My favorite roast was Brazil Mogiano for its boldness, but it was also subtle. I like a medium roast. Right up the middle. My husband? He was into them all!

Behind-the-Scenes of Coffee Bean Roasting

We wrapped up with a behind-the-scenes look at the roasters and even learned about the farm Press Coffee owns, which supplies their unique beans.  If you love coffee, want a fun outing with friends, or cool date idea, I canโ€™t recommend this class enough. And yes, you even get a code for a free bag of coffee with a subscription (no pressure to keep it, but why wouldnโ€™t you?!).

Overwhelmed by Paper? Discover How Assured Document Destruction Can Save Your Space and Sanity!

Assured Document Destruction

Look, Do Not Ask Me How We Got Here

We found ourselves facing an overwhelming paper crisisโ€”an ever-growing mountain of confidential documents dating back seven to eight years.  As I stared at the bags and bags of papers, we always kept what we deemed โ€œimportant,โ€ but it seemed like we had miscalculated just how much โ€œimportantโ€ really added up to.

128 Gallons of Papers to Shred

In my quest to find a solution, I finally decided I could trust Assured Document Destruction.  If you, too, are staring at your own growing pile of paperwork and feeling like it is taking over your home, let me introduce you to the solution that saved usโ€”and could save you too!

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico’s-Rhythms of the Night by Vallarta Adventures

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico’s Rhythms of the Night by Vallarta Adventures

When we went to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, I had one thing in mind, to RELAX. I did not want to do the usual excursion, city hopping, out all hours of the night, that we usually do. Sleeping, eating, and sitting by the pool were the only things on the agenda.

Until I stumbled upon a Puerto Vallarta post in one of the travel groups, suggesting that anyone going to Puerto Vallarta MUST do, “Rhythms of the Night” by Vallarta Adventures. Initially it was just my husband, me, my best friend, and her husband travelling, but my daughter talked us into letting her come along.  My friend then brought her daughter as well.

Phoenix to Puerto Vallarta

We flew from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Puerto Vallarta International Airport, non-stop.  It was important to me to leave the country, with a short flight time.  Our flight was two and half hours.

We booked this Airbnb with a gorgeous view. The view was mandatory considering that my agenda consisted of merely breathing, lounging, eating, and sitting by the pool.

Oceanview Airbnb in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Click for listing.

We headed into the city one of the days, for about three hours, but the activity that had every one of us in amazement was the Rhythms of the Night sunset cruise, dinner, and show.

Dinner in the city Puerto Vallarta, Mexico La Madalena Restaurant

Puerto Vallartaโ€™s Rhythms of the Night

I purchased tickets to the show in advance from Puerto Vallarta Tours, $116 for adults and $109 for kids, 6-17 years old.  We received 30% off for booking more than four days in advance.  Regular or same-day pricing was $165 for adults and $155 for kids.

TIP 1: Book more than four days in advance to take advantage of 30% off regular ticket pricing.

The day of the tour, I used my very beginner Spanish to hale us a taxi and to get us to the dock where we boarded the boat.ย  Honestly, you do not need to know Spanish to get a taxi and arrive at your destination safely. However, I find every opportunity to practice.

Once we arrived at the ferry station, we made our way to the line where we presented our tickets, then we went through a security check. Yes, a security check, like in the airport.  Check the Vallarta Adventures website for prohibited items.

We boarded the boat, where there was a bar and plenty seating. I suggest getting there well before departure, so your group can sit together.  The suggested arrival time is 45 minutes prior to departure.

We arrived on the island where the Rhythms of the Night show takes place in about 30-45 minutes.  There was onboard entertainment, where they sang American songs, most people would be familiar with.  People danced and sang along.

It is a whole experience as soon as you step foot on the boat, let alone once you make it to the tiki lit island.

Tiki Island Arrival

TIP 2:  Book the sunset cruise time.  There is an earlier day show, but the sunset booking time is more exquisite.

We were seated in designated areas around the island and assigned a dinner station.ย  Dinner was buffet style.ย  We had a traditional Mexican dinner.

We had a waiter who served drinks and any additional items you may want from the buffet.

After about an hour and a half, the staff began to clear the tables, and we waited to be dismissed.

TIP 3: Use the restroom before you head to the stadium for the show.

We travelled to the stadium up large, flat, rocked stairs.  We stood in line for about 15 minutes before we could enter the stadium.  This activity is not recommended if you have difficulties doing a slight hike.

I would like to describe the show, but it is indescribable.  It is something to be experienced.  Here is glimpse of the amazingness we witnessed.

The entire crew from start to finish conducted this experience flawlessly.  If you need any more convincing, check their reviews.  Perfection.

DIY Farmhouse Kitchen Table

We bought our first home in 2018, and like many others, the first thing we thought was, letโ€™s go shopping!

Well, thatโ€™s what we though, but for us, that was not an actual reality after dishing out closing and down payment funds. So what did we do when we needed a dining room table at a reasonable cost? We DIY ourselves a farmhouse kitchen table. I began researching and found the amazing Ana White. Ana White provides free, printable, and easy to follow woodworking plans for hundreds of types of projects.

My husband and I used her โ€œBeginner Farm Tableโ€ plans to build our farmhouse-style table. Link to the plans we used: https://www.ana-white.com/woodworking-projects/beginner-farm-table-2-tools-50-lumber

Ana states in the plans that only two tools (drill and a saw) and $50 are needed to build and complete the DIY farmhouse kitchen table and immediately my husband was skeptical.

TIP: Your local home improvement store will make cuts for you for free if you do not own a saw. Some policies charge .25-.50 cents per cut after two cuts.

We are not woodworkers by trade, so we were not sure if the tool assessment or cost was accurate. I said to my husband, we should go price the materials. We did just that at our local home improvement store, and the $50 cost was spot on (see editor’s note).

For us, all the lumber and screws were about $55 with local taxes. We had to buy stain and paint in the color we preferred, so that was an additional cost and if you do not have a drill, that will also be an expense. A drill will be cost worthy for future projects, if you plan to build other projects around your home, so consider it an investment.

It took us a weekend to build the table. We sanded, stained, and painted over the next week. We let the table cure for about three days before we put it to use. We built the table inside the house, otherwise it would not fit through the doorway once we completed it. The length of the table is 8 feet, and width is about 4 feet. From start to finish, total completion time was 10 days, with having to go work in between.

Our DIY farmhouse kitchen table is still our main dining table 5 years later, in 2024.

Art & Prints Refresh for Less

This canvas had a beautiful, yellow, and orange pear painted on it. The canvas hung in my kitchen. A few years ago, I repurposed the canvas and created a “gather” sign to hang in my themed modern farmhouse home.

Doing a refresh in a few spaces and decided to update the gather sign once again.

Out with the canvas, and I went with a grayish/black metal, glass frame from HomeGoods for $29.99. That is typically more than I would normally pay for this type of project, but I had these frames on-hand for a different project that I have not done yet so I decided to put it to use now.

Anyhow, I searched Etsy for a digital download of a gather print I liked. I paid $5. The Etsy seller even made the image high resolution for free, so I could print to poster size, 24×36. Then I sent the digital print to Walgreens for printing.

Walgreenโ€™s Photo Center often has 50% off printing promo codes. If you do not see a promo code displayed on the screen for your project, wait. Printing a 24×36 inch poster sized print is normally $32.99. I paid $16.49 plus tax.

Tips:

  • Find inexpensive frames from Dollar Tree, Amazon, HomeGoods, etc.
  • Find digital art or prints on Etsy from sellers with a style you are looking for.
  • Find art on art.com and society6.com.
  • Use Walgreens or a similar print shop to print your digital art or print.
  • Always use a promo code to save money.

My gather sign refresh cost $21.49.

Did you know about this printing hack? Have you used Etsy, art.com, or society6 to print art or digital prints? Where do you typically buy your frames?

Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant

I learned about Cooperโ€™s Hawk Winery & Restaurant from my co-worker.ย  He knows all about the speakeasies, wineries, and bars.ย  He is very thorough in his analysis, so I took him at his word when he said the winery was cool.ย  I do not know if my restaurant experience was in the forefront of my mind, but I vaguely remember him not really raving about the restaurant side of things, but going into detail about the winery.ย  As you read on, you will see why both sentiments may be the case.

I made a reservation through Open Table the same day, and we ventured out.ย  Make a reservation more than a day in advance if you want to be seated indoors, because reservations fill up fast.ย  We were able to snag a table outdoors on the patio.ย  Thank goodness the weather was nice, cool, and misters going made it a bit chilly for me.ย  Good thing, I always have a jacket for backup.

Patrons’ attire ranged from dressed up to casual.ย  We were somewhere in between.

When you first walk-in there is a retail area where you can purchase Cooperโ€™s Hawk branded wine, wine glasses, and other wine accessories.  As you walk through the retail shop, the reservation check-in area is situated right outside the restaurant entrance.  Off to the left, the wine tasting area spans across the side wall, and it was packed full of wine tasters.  The wine tasting does not take reservations and is on a first-come, first-serve basis.  The attendants said to allow 45 minutes to one-hour for the tastings, if you plan to participate before a dinner reservation.

With the reservation we waited approximately 15 minutes for our table to be ready.  Once we were seated, we were offered two complimentary wine tastings each.  I tried two white wines, Gewรผrztraminer and Blanc de Blanc.  I appreciated them both, but I was surprisingly delighted by the Gewรผrztraminer.  I had previously researched this wine, and it was described as the โ€œgrown up Moscato.โ€  That description was quite accurate, a white wine, sweet but not too sweet and delicious on its own.

I was feeling adventurous, so I already knew I would order a wine flight as opposed to a single glass of wine.ย  The flight allowed four options.ย  You can choose a pre-selected bubbles, white, red, or lux flight for $18.99-$22.99.ย  You can create your own flight for $21.99.ย  I built my own flight, two white wines, Cooperโ€™s Hawk White and Reisling.ย  I also added two red wines, Cooperโ€™s Hawk Red and Lux Cabernet.ย  The two red wines were not my favorite.ย  One, I am not a fan of wine being served warm, even though this is the red wine etiquette.ย  I wanted to break all the rules and add a few cubes of ice, but I did not.ย  Two, one of the red wines was spicy.ย  I am also not a fan of wines that leave a hotness on your palate.ย  I chose the reds to accompany my main dish, which was beef.ย  Both white wines were shockingly smooth, and delightful.ย  Made me regret choosing reds, at all.ย  I enjoyed both whites overall, but the Riesling most of all.

Moving on to the underwhelming part of the evening, the food, and maybe I should not say it was completely underwhelming.  The Brussel Sprouts were amazing.  This is what we ordered:

  • Crispy Brussels Sprouts – Cashews, Mint, Sweet Tai Chili, Sesame-Sriracha Aioli, $16.99.
  • Braised Short Rib Risotto – Roasted Mushroom, Sweet Onion, White Wine, Shaved Parmesan, White Truffle Oil, $33.99.
  • Turkey Burger – Fresh Ground All-Natural Turkey, Herbs, Lemon, Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion, Seasoned Mayo, $16.90.
  • Shrimp & Scallop Risotto – Sweet Corn, Asparagus, Peas, Spinach, Parmesan, White Truffle Oil, $32.90.
  • Reeseโ€™s Ice Cream Cookie – Warm Chocolate Chip Cookie Baked with Reeseโ€™s Peanut Butter Cups, Vanilla Ice Cream, $12.99.
  • Key Lime Pie – Fresh-Squeezed Citrus, Graham Cracker Crust, Whipped Cream, Lime Dust, $10.99.

The braised short rib was edible, but I had to jazz it up with parmesan cheese, and then I could eat at least half of it with the added cheese flavor.ย  I should have been warned when the people at the table next to us left their Short Rib Risotto unfinished.ย  The turkey burger was nicely seasoned with natural herbs but lacked salt.ย  The Shrimp & Scallop Risotto arrived late, and it is not pictured because it immediately went back.ย  The Shrimp & Scallop Risotto lacked and missed the mark all the way around. Aesthetics, flavor, and timeliness.ย  I was shocked to learn this dish is a chefโ€™s recommendation on the menu.ย  It should be removed immediately from the entire menu.ย

Both desserts were complimentary, due to the late food and the lack of quality of the Shrimp & Scallop Risotto. I did not try the Reeseโ€™s Ice Cream Cookie, but can you go wrong with Reeseโ€™s and Ice Cream?ย  I hope not.ย  The Key Lime Pie was very good.ย  I am a Key Lime Pie connoisseur, so take my word.ย

Despite the not-so-great experience with the main courses, overall, I would return to Cooperโ€™s Hawk Winery, and indulge in their extensive wine list.ย  As my co-worker described it, it is certainly a great place.ย  The winery is impeccable.ย  We decided as a group that if we must eat when visiting Cooperโ€™s Hawk Winery, the appetizers are the way to go, because have you ever had a terrible appetizer, anywhere?

There are several locations across the United States. In Arizona, there are four locations, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale and Surprise.
