USA Today Wine & Food Experience Review: Should This Festival Make Your Annual List?


Your Field Guide to the USA Today Wine & Food Experience

I went. I experienced it. Hereโ€™s what you need to know.

“If Gusโ€™s Fried Chicken is at the festival, get in that line first.” A seasoned festival-goer shared this rule with me while we waited at the gates of the USA Today Wine & Food Experience, and she was right. One bite of the piping-hot chicken leg, perfectly seasoned with a hint of spice, set the tone for everything that followed.

Spring and fall kick off the festival season here in Arizona (we skip summer for obvious reason ๐Ÿ˜…), but the USA Today Wine & Food Experience deserves a spot on your list every year, no matter the season.

After see the USA Today Wine & Food Experience advertised on every social platform, I finally gave in and bought tickets to see if the hype was real. General Admission tickets were $65.00. Worth it.

TIP: Always take advantage of presale pricing. In some cases, you can save up to $20 per ticket.


Location, Parking, and Arrival Experience

The festival takes place at an outdoor venue space on High Street in Scottsdale, Arizona. We arrived about an hour early to get in line, which turned out to be a great move.

Parking was easy and stress-free. We parked in the surface lot for free, and there was also a parking garage available for overflow parking. That was complimentary for the event day as wellโ€”no validation required.


Entry Process and What’s Included with Admission

While waiting in line, the couple behind us asked if weโ€™d attended the USA Today Wine & Food Experience in previous years. We hadnโ€™tโ€”but they had.

We asked if early entry was worth the extra cost as we watched early entrants already enjoying the festival. Their answer? No.

After finishing the festival ourselves, we completely agreed. Everything is still available during standard entry hours (1 PMโ€“4 PM), and the lines move surprisingly fast. You wonโ€™t miss out by skipping early access.


Entry Process and Whatโ€™s Included With Admission

Before the gates opened, vendor staff walked the line to check IDs and place wristbands on everyone. Once security opened the gates, we were handed plastic wine glassesโ€”and just like that, we were on our way.

Once inside, there are no additional costs. All wine and food samples are included with admission, which makes it easy to relax and enjoy without constantly pulling out your wallet.

TIP: Restrooms and hand-washing stations were easy to find, but also bring your hand-santizer.


Food, Wine, and the Gusโ€™s Fried Chicken Rule

Most vendors offered small bites and wine samplesโ€”except for Gusโ€™s Fried Chicken.

Gusโ€™s was by far the most popular vendor at the festival, handing out regular-sized chicken thighs and legs. A seasoned festival-goer shared an important rule with us: If Gusโ€™s is at the festival, get in line first.

Even though the line looked long, we were through it in about five minutes. At first, I thought the portions were smallโ€ฆ until I realized we hadnโ€™t even made it halfway around the festival and I was already full.

There were plenty of seating areas and tall, stand-up tables scattered throughout the venue, making it easy to take breaks as needed.

The festival also had a well-curated playlist that set the vibe without overpowering conversations. Just enough energy to keep you moving in between booths.

TIP: Complimentary bottled water is provided. Bring a small bag to stash vendor freebies.


Standout Bites and Favorite Festival Moments

One of my standout moments was having one of the best lamb chops Iโ€™ve ever eaten. The Country Financial sponsored lounge-style seating had lamb chops straight off the flamed grill from the steakhouse, Ocean Prime.

I took one bite and immediately took a photo to remember the moment.

Toward the end, I was officially tapping out and found a shaded seat where I stayed for a while, while my husband continued his journey through bourbon, whiskey, and liquor tastings.

Even though itโ€™s the Wine & Food Experience, there were definitely some heavy hitters in the spirits category as well.

TIP: Always designate a driver before participating in tastings.


How Long to Expect to Stay

After making our roundsโ€”and doubling back to our favoritesโ€”we headed out.
Total time inside the event: about 2.5 hours.

It was the perfect amount of time to enjoy everything without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.


Final Verdict: Is the USA Today Wine & Food Experience Worth It?

The USA Today Wine & Food Experience is officially on our permanent annual list. We couldnโ€™t stop saying how much of a good time it wasโ€”and honestly, thatโ€™s the best kind of review.

If you love great food, good wine, and a well-organized festival experience, this one absolutely delivers.

Can We Talk About Social Media Food Hype?

The way I am so tired of over-hyped TikTok and Instagram eateries. Social media has disappointed me too many times with perfect reels, staged bites, and thenโ€ฆ underwhelming food.

So, when my husband showed me an impressively edited reel for Waffleto Brunch & Waffles in Goodyear, AZ, and asked if I wanted to try it, I gave him a non-committal, โ€œI guess.โ€

First Impressions: Busy but Welcoming

We pulled up around 11 a.m. on a Saturday. It was busy, but we didnโ€™t have to wait, major win. The place is a small sit-down brunch spot with a casual, open feel. We were greeted right away and handed menus, which gave us a moment to look things over before ordering.

Waffleto Menu: Sweet Meets Savory

Waffletoโ€™s menu offers hearty savory waffles and over-the-top sweet creations. in a good way:

Savory Options Include:

  • Fried egg, bacon, and spinach
  • Chorizo and egg
  • Grilled chicken with pesto
  • Omelets and traditional breakfast plates (for the non-waffle folks)

Sweet Options:

  • Strawberries and cream (with seasonal berries, but you can request strawberries only)
  • Peaches and cream
  • Nutella-topped waffles

What We Ordered

We split our meal:

  • One Fried Egg, Bacon, and Spinach Waffleto (no syrup drizzleโ€”because I donโ€™t trust the drizzler!)
  • One Berries Waffleto (strawberries only)

You can split your waffle between savory and sweet, which we lovedโ€”it felt like a brunch plate and dessert all in one.

And I have to mention this, the home-fried breakfast potatoes were delicious. I live for a good breakfast potato, and these hit the mark. Crispy on the outside, tender inside, and perfectly seasoned. Donโ€™t skip them.

Watching the Waffle Magic Happen

The open kitchen gave us a view of the action, and I noticed the waffles looked darker than I prefer more brown than golden. Iโ€™m a light, fluffy, slight-crunch-on-the-edge kind of waffle girl.

When I asked about it, our server reassured us that the color comes from the batter, not overcooking, and theyโ€™re still soft inside. She was right. The waffles were perfectly cooked, lightly sweet, and honestly, some of the best Iโ€™ve had.

Is Waffleto Worth the Trip?

If youโ€™re in the Goodyear, Avondale, or West Phoenix areaโ€”yes, Waffleto is worth a stop.

If you have to drive far or wait in a long line? Maybe not. Itโ€™s good, but not a โ€œdrive across the Valley and wait an hourโ€ kind of place. That said, Waffleto delivers on flavor and creativity, and the service was on point.

Final Thoughts

Waffleto might not be the viral hotspot you travel for, but itโ€™s definitely a local gem if youโ€™re nearby. The flavors are solid, the sweet/savory combo is fun, and the vibe is low-key and relaxed.

Copper & Sage – The Restaurant Meal That Defined 2024 and Will Keep Me Coming Back in 2025

I am about to share the best dining tip you will ever get. Order as many dishes as your budget allows. Share them with your party.  Trust me, you will want to savor as much as possible from Copper & Sageโ€™s incredible menu. Here is what my friends and I ordered during our visit:

Shareables:

  • Bourbon Deviled Eggs – $9
  • Fried Green Tomatoes – $12

Main Dishes:

  • Walleye Fish & Chips – $27
  • 2 Wagyu Short Ribs with Parmesan Risotto – $39 each

Dessert:

  • Beignets – Complimentary

Side:

  • Mac & Cheese – $10

Cocktails:

  • Holy Water – $13
  • Riesling – $9
  • Strawberry Hill – $14

There were three of us in our party, and this was more than enough food for everyone to enjoy.


The Dish That Defined 2024

Hands down, the showstopper was the Wagyu Short Rib with Parmesan Risotto. This dish typically comes with grits. We noticed risotto paired with another dish on the menu. We asked if we could make the switch.  Our request was graciously granted, and it was the best decision we could have made. The tender, flavorful short rib combined with the creamy, cheesy risotto melted in our mouths. It was so good we ordered two plates of it!

But before I get carried away with the main courses, let us talk about the appetizers.


Star-Worthy Appetizers

Fried Green Tomatoes

To date, I have only had one other fried green tomato dish that wowed me as much as this one. That was in Atlanta.  Copper & Sage has officially joined that list. Their perfectly fried green tomatoes are topped with a sprinkle of chevre cheese. A balsamic reduction ties everything together beautifully. Every bite had us saying, โ€œOhhh, okay! Yum.  This is amazing.โ€

Bourbon Deviled Eggs

I love it when restaurants elevate classic dishes, and Copper & Sageโ€™s Bourbon Deviled Eggs did not disappoint. Instead of the usual candied bacon topping, they added bacon jamโ€”and wow.  If the phrase “bacon jam” gives you pause, do not hesitate. It is a game-changer.

A Second Main Dish Worth Mentioning

The Walleye Fish & Chips was another standout.  Some might find the fish a bit crispier than expected. However, this is exactly how fried fish should be. It should be crispy, crunchy, and seasoned to perfection.  This dish could easily hold its own as a satisfying lunch option.

I almost failed to mention the side of Mac & Cheese. I would not order the mac & cheese again. It was not giving what mac & cheese was supposed to give. Copper & Sage, if you read this: more cheese and cream, and this might make my recommendations list.

A Sweet Finale (Almost)

Normally, we do not have room for dessert. However, we were celebrating my friendโ€™s birthday. Copper & Sage generously provided complimentary beignets for the table.  They had great potential, but a few werenโ€™t fully cooked in the center. My tip? Ask for the beignets to be cooked well-done.  I will be giving them another shot on my next visit.

Drinks to Celebrate

As part of the birthday festivities, we indulged in some delicious cocktails.  Copper & Sage has an extensive house menu and a full bar to accommodate any request.  The Holy Water and Strawberry Hill cocktails were refreshing. They were perfectly balanced. The Riesling was a light and crisp addition to the meal.


Why I Will Be Back in 2025

As soon as I got home, I told my husband that Copper & Sage was the Restaurant Meal That Defined 2024.  I am already planning a return trip.  This might even be our Valentineโ€™s Day outing next month.

The Best Breakfast in Tucson: Why Boboโ€™s Is Worth the Wait

Tucson, Arizona is not just a place we drive to for concerts or a quick getaway, itโ€™s also home to one of the best breakfast spots weโ€™ve ever experienced, Boboโ€™s Restaurant.  During one of our trips, I searched for โ€œthe best breakfast in Tucson,โ€ and Yelp led us straight to this charming gem.  With nearly a five-star rating, we knew we had to check it out.  Spoiler alert: it did not disappoint.

The Drive to Tucson

Getting from Phoenix to Tucson is an easy 95-mile drive, taking about an hour and a half.  Whether you are headed there for a specific event or just passing through, you will definitely want to make time for a stop at Boboโ€™s.

First Impressions

We first visited Boboโ€™s on a Sunday morning around 11:30 AM. It is a very small, yellow brick building sitting off a main road, that otherwise I would have driven passed.  When we arrived, about 10โ€“15 people were already waiting outside. Pro tip: if you are not a fan of waiting, plan your visit strategically.  The wait for a table can take about an hour during peak times, but we have also visited later in the day, about 40 minutes before closing, and got seated immediately.

Whatโ€™s On the Menu

Letโ€™s talk about the food, because itโ€™s why you go to Boboโ€™s, and itโ€™s what makes the wait 100% worth it.  Over a few visits, we have tried several dishes:

  • Apple Upside-Down Pancake: ย My husband says this is a breakfast masterpiece thatโ€™s equal parts sweet and filling.
  • Buttermilk Pancake: Fluffy perfection every single time. Cutting your pancakes like this makes them taste even better.
  • Chicken Fried Steak with Eggs & Fried Potatoes: Comfort food at its finest, with rich gravy. I usually put it on the side, because you cannot trust everyone’s gravy. I eventually put it on my food, since it passed the taste test. The potatoes I can have live without.
  • French Toast with Eggs & Bacon: The French toast is done how we used to make cinnamon toast in the oven as kids.

The consistency of the food is outstanding.  It is clear why Boboโ€™s has earned its loyal following and stellar Yelp ratings.

If you do not know by now, I am always about value, and for the quality and portion sizes, Boboโ€™s offers unbeatable value.  Whether you are craving something hearty or sweet, you will leave both satisfied and full without breaking the bank.

Better Than Momโ€™s Cooking?

Boboโ€™s tagline is โ€œJust like momโ€™s cookinโ€™,โ€ but honestly, they might need to tweak it to โ€œBetter than your momโ€™s cookin,โ€™ at least for breakfast.  Sorry, Mom!โ€  It is that good.

Think Wine Tasting, but with Coffee: My Experience at Press Coffee Roasterโ€™s Interactive 101 Class

When I signed up for Press Coffee’s 101 class, I wasnโ€™t entirely convinced that I’d walk out a coffee aficionado. But as it turns out, I left with some serious coffee knowledge.  Everything from where coffee originates, to how itโ€™s processed, to what it takes to get it from the farm to your cup.

I stumbled upon this class thanks to Eventbriteโ€™s โ€œevents you might likeโ€ feature (they know me so well), and seeing Press Coffeeโ€™s name didnโ€™t hurt.  Press Coffee is always listed as one of the valleyโ€™s premier coffee roasters.  After all, they have 12 locations around Arizona and even supply coffee to multiple retail spots across the valley.

We arrived to find Press buzzing with coffee drinkers in the front, some sipping and socializing, others laser-focused on laptops.  In the back, thereโ€™s a spacious second level for more seating, but we stayed downstairs, where three enormous coffee bean roasters sat in all their luxuriousness, along with our cozy 12-person classroom setup.  It was perfect for both tasting and learning.

Our host welcomed us with a steamy cup of Gesha coffee.  This rare, high-end coffee ($50 per cup, just FYI!) has a unique profile thatโ€™s more tea-like than coffee-like, and he wasnโ€™t kidding.  It was a delicate, almost floral flavor, unlike anything Iโ€™d tasted in coffee form.

The Class Kicks Off

From there, we dove into the rich world of coffee.  We learned about origins, flavors, and roasting techniques.  A cool part of the tasting was letting each blend cool down a bit and then trying it again.  Who knew a little time could bring out so many different notes?

My favorite roast was Brazil Mogiano for its boldness, but it was also subtle. I like a medium roast. Right up the middle. My husband? He was into them all!

We wrapped up with a behind-the-scenes look at the roasters and even learned about the farm Press Coffee owns, which supplies their unique beans.  If you love coffee, want a fun outing with friends, or cool date idea, I canโ€™t recommend this class enough. And yes, you even get a code for a free bag of coffee with a subscription (no pressure to keep it, but why wouldnโ€™t you?!).
